2018 Reflections, and 2019… what great things will you achieve this year

So 2018 is done and the new year is with us. Have you reflected on what you achieved in 2018. Likely we won’t. but we should.

The big question for 2019 is what will you achieve. What lofty goals have you set, and are you going to get in there and do it.

I’d like to borrow an excerpt from the speech “Citizenship In A Republic“ by Theordore Roosevelt

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

Nice. The whole speech is pretty long, but this is an oft quoted piece of the speech.

Actually, Teddy is remembered for a couple of other things: the association of his name with the Teddy Bear around 1902, and the creation of the US national park system after a 1903 camping trip with John Muir.

John Muir himself was later known as the “Father of the National Parks”, and a pretty interesting guy. He walked 1,000 miles from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico, sailed to Cuba, traveled to New York City, then by boat to Panama, took a train and a boat all the way to San Francisco, then headed into Yosemite.

Life really is about getting out and doing things. It’s not just about sitting down and doing compliance for another year.

So, what are you going to do in 2019?
